Thanks for that. I'd seen the site but never bothered because you can't get NTE in Australia - but I never thought you would be able to use it just to find the 74XX equivalent. Good thinking and thanks again.

Sure. Here's the NTE equivalent:

Industry Number  : F9316PC
 NTE Device Number: NTE74161
 IC-TTL,SYNCH BINARY COUNTER,16-PIN DIP

Try www.nteinc.com for their Quick Cross software (which is free). Quite
 helpful in figuring out what parts are :)
