Hi Rodger,
The ring test works for the transformer used in vectors as much as in
flybacks used in raster monitors. You are applying a known signal to a
transformer and checking the output levels...
The ring test is a check to see if the high frequency transformer
(flyback in rasters) dampens too quickly - a ring of 5 to 7 times (or
more) indicates a transformer that is unlikely to have any shorted
windings. Damping diodes (usually in the HOT) are used to suppress the
ring of course...
