I just bought a Microchip PICStart Plus programmer and software. It it pretty nice.
Microchip supplys (you can also just download it for free) a Assembly programming
environment and a C environment as well. Plus, there is a simulator and a integrated
debugger. If anyone on this list really wants to start getting involved with PIC
projects, download the software etc, and check it out. I have been very impressed.

Also, there are companies that have shareware C++ compilers for it as well.
