Well, it now appears to work. Had a couple of bad 244s that I tracked
down by assuming someone plugged the sub-boards in backwards and so I
simply did a diode check on the small PCB edge connectors relative to
common. After replacing the two TTL ICs the device now produces what
appears to be a Signature for ROMs inserted in the socket - not a
Checksum (rats!).

And it is not the Fluke FIDE Signature, so now I have to track down a
file to HP style signature converter to see if the device actually works
as intended, my eprom programmer does not generate a Signature for ROM...

Thanks for the offer of a copy of the manual - I will add it, of course,
to TTL FTP once it appears.

I suspect this tool is going to sit on the shelf a lot...
