Usually the problem is right at the the 40 pin IC header and you can
easily crimp on a new one if you don't have the twisted ribbon wire. You
can even order them from Digi-Key with the 40 pin plug end terminating
in the 40 pin IC socket.
The advantage with the twisted is you can run a cable of about a foot.
With flat ribbon 8 inches is pretty safe.
I always plug a 40 pin IC socket (with flat solder tails) onto the UUT
end to act as sacrifice pins. Easier to replace that one!
