James,
The refresh rate is totally dependant on how many objects need to be drawn on
the screen. During (many!) troubleshooting sessions with my Battlezone and Star
Wars, I was able to make comparisons against the display on the monitor and the
scope. You can definitely see a difference in the refresh rate between a simple
display (Battlezone high score list) and a more complex display (Star Wars
attract sequence). When Star Wars is showing the "disappearing text" you can
observe a slight "blinking" effect from the difficulty in displaying all of the
objects on the screen quickly enough.
However, there is no constant "refresh rate" that is characteristic of a rastor
display. A rastor display has a predictable scan sequence that doesn't vary no
matter what is happening to the objects being displayed. Depending on what is
being displayed, a vector monitor may update much faster than a rastor, or much
slower if quite a bit needs to be drawn.
