If the AVG Controller had some bad address counters around the region of the master
character lookup table or even troughout the range of the text subroutines, then it could
be the problem still. I always swap this chip out first just because it is indeed socketed
and can cause lots of strange symptoms. It is just a nice time saver to make sure it is
not the problem first. Plus, these chips seem to be dying more lately.

I have no clue since I don't have a board in front of me. One thing I did notice though was that the text starts at around location 3084, and that the diagonal cross hatch pattern came after it. Try going into test mode and make your way to the diagonal cross hatch and see if it displays. I'm guessing it won't.
