I was told by a guy that worked there, that the original was designed by Larry
Rosenthal and that the diode tripler block (that big gray block that the HV
anode is attached to) cost about twice that of either the newer gold or black
box HV modules.
The HV modules were discovered by accident. They were originally designed for
medical use, and somehow an engineer at Cinematronics saw an add in an EDN
type mag, or something, and gave the company a call. They were able to build
the whole power supplies for less that half the price of the tripler alone.
The power supplies preferred by Cinematronics were the larger gold ones, the
smaller black HV modules were a 2nd source needed because the "gold" company
(Keltron?) could not keep up with the demand. The preference was less on
technical grounds and more on business relationships. The "gold" company was
very willing to work with Cinematronics, make some small changes to their
design to make it direct plug in compatible (Not to mention label it as a
"Cinematronics" power supply). The "black" company was hard to get a hold of,
and you needed an adapter cable to use these. Both had very low death rates
compared to Larry's original design.
