Asteroids display question

I have an Asteroids board that has me stumped. The game plays fine, but as
the asteroids move around the screen, it appears as though they are passing
behind an invisible grid that covers the entire screen. You can only see it
when rocks or a ship passes by and you will see a gap in the outline of the
rock, corresponding to either a vertical or horizontal grid line. These gaps
are extremely small (about 1 pixel if these were raster games) and do not
follow the rocks when they move. Has anyone ever seen this or know what
might be causing this?
