The "acid" in a battery of this type is actually an alkali, not an
acid... I used to run into this problem all the time when I was working
for a company making industrial equipment (the NiCads ruptured constantly
from a "three engineers ago" design flaw that massively overcharged the
batteries), and I had good results with, believe it or not, plain old white
vinegar.
My favored method is to scrub the existing corrosion with the
softest-bristle toothbrush you can find, using the vinegar full-strength -
then, soak the whole board in a 1:1 solution of vinegar and distilled water
and scrub the surrounding areas if necessary. Follow it with a
distilled-water rinse, then blow-dry it and go from there...
