Ripple refers to poorly filtered liner (or maybe some switching) power
supplies. Often the result of either bad primary filter caps OR bad ground
connections it shows up on raster games as a black bar moving across the
screen, and on Vector games as ripple in the image. There are several
supplies on vector games that need to be checked, the +5VDC, and the
secondary +15 and -15VDC supplies for the op-amps and DACs. Best examined
with a scope, and I like to hook a single ground wire from the scope to the
monitor chassis when on a ripple hunt. This will show you signals relative
to the monitor and as such should give you a good idea about sources of
ripple. On any of the regulated supplies there should be 0.00VAC ripple on
the regulated output. Almost any 'scope will do for these tests, and you
can also monitor the HV output to the screen of the tube to see if that
might have any ripple.
60Hz ripple should look like waves on the lines, switching supply or HV
ripple is usually tiny little jags on the lines. Someone should take
pictures and post them up on Spies or somewhere for reference. I don't have
any monitors or XY games running to demo this on...
