Bigtime. I poked around with the idea of getting into this, it looks
from their pics that the hardware is definitely up to the task, or at
least it will be by the time I can afford it.
An ALC 60X Argon ion laser is about $1000 refurbed, $500 surplus.
I wasn't able to find pricing on the SP138, but I'd guess it's in
the $300-500 range.
The controller and scanners are where the money starts to add up.
Again, I don't have prices, but the retrofit on the 6800 scanners
to get them up to 50000 points per second is around $150 per scanner,
so I think you could assume another $1000-2000 in parts there.
All told, it could probably be done by a serious hobbyist for $5-10K.
Far from cheap... but in 3-5 years, it just might be down to $2K with
better display resolution.
