That kind of trick will get you dead!
a real probe has full isolation.
i recomend a switchable probe, X1 / X10
make sure that the frequency is atleast as high as the scope, and the voltage is atleast 500v
remember - rectified mains is 385VDC!!! (in Europe - before the americans start correcting me)
forget RS, i got a great probe from MAPLIN.
