Ftp is screwed because you are trying to use a HTML browser (probably shit-ms explorer, it has a rep for freezing on ftp)

DO THE JOB PROPERLY, use an Ftp client.
BULLETPROOF FTP is a good one, dont use cute-ftp it's spyware!!!
