I think there will be a few games that the hard-core collector types will
hunt and pay big $$$ for, but in general I'm not so sure. Back before eBay
took off for game stuff I used to save all the forsale posts on the
newsgroup. They're interesting reading now:
3/3/1997 - Star Wars boardset (working) $125
2/23/1997 - Omega Race Upright (non-work) $200
2/12/1997 - Donkey Kong Upright (working) $495
2/12/1997 - Altered Beast Upright (working) $295
2/7/1997 - Time Pilot Upright (working) $260
2/3/1997 - Space Duel PCB's (untested) $50/ea
2/1/1997 - Battle Zone (working) $450
1/22/1997 - Pacman board (working) $135
1/21/1997 - Space Fury (working) $600
Really, it seems like most of these would probably sell for less on eBay
now. (That's over four years later, and after eBay!)
The stuff that seems to have gone up significantly are the Robotrons, Ms
Pacs, Galagas, TRONs, Asteroids, etc. Not the "rarest", but the most fondly
remembered by the most people:
1/28/1997 - Ms Pac upright $350
1/28/1997 - TRON upright $300
2/18/1997 - Ms. Pac cocktail $500
2/25/1997 - Asteroids $375
2/25/1997 - Galaga $500
3/2/1997 - Galaga $450
Those are probably all quite good deals today.
Also, since reproduction artwork is more available now I suspect people are
much more willing to try to restore conversions-- there were a few
"converted Joust" or "converted Stargate" type items in the $125 range which
I think would probably be jumped on pretty quickly for that price now. (If
only for eBay resale value.)
