I had a problem very similar to this and this old post helped out...

The characters were a little screwed up but the rest of the game played
fairly well. On the scaling test I saw the same problem as the original
poster and it turned out to be a bad resistor right by C4 on the AVG
board. You might try checking that area and see if there's some problem.
