Short answer - NTE558
Here is a message from back in 1997 when I had a similar problem. (Mine had
had a cap kit installed wrong, with ZD901 put in D901's spot. Needless to
say it didn't work. :-)
Is Greg Woodcock still around, and has the FAQ been updated since then ? I
think this was going to be added to it.

I did some more checking since I last posted. That GH-3F crosses to a NTE558
-- which IS readily available (Mouser had it in stock). They had
backordered the 551, so I just switched that order. The 558 looks like an
even better fit actually, since it is in a DO-41 case instead of an aluminum
case.
The moral of our story is kids:
1) Always double check the part number BEFORE installing a part, and make
sure you are putting it in the right location. I still do the old Heathkit
trick of taping my parts down to a piece of paper with the part number and
circuit location number written on it.
2) When you acquire non-working equipment, ALWAYS suspect the previous
person's work. If it he tried to fix it and it still has problems -- there
is probably a reason.
