Well it seems the WG was not at fault at all ...
I was testing the boards XY output on my scope and that familiar acrid
smell returned. looking around one of the 8 pin TL082 amps had smoke
coming from it!
I changed this (OK robbed it from a partly stripped Tempest PCB) and it
works. It's been on for an hour so far :o)
This leads me onto the next subject:
What precautions should I take when testing "untested" Tempest PCB's in my
game. Or am I better off disconnecting the monitor and using my scope.?
