I received my ZVG yesterday and hooked it up this evening. I'm running the
DOS version of the ZVGEMU as that's what's currently available. I hooked it
up to the Amplifone in my Star Wars cabinet and watched Star Wars and
Tempest come to life. The display quality is simply stunning. This system
will make one incredible accessory to your arcade.
I had a Pentium 120 laying around, so I put it to service with the setup.
It was fast enough to run Tempest in real time, but it was too slow to keep
up with Star Wars without flickering the display and tripping the spot
killer several times per second. They recommend a 200Mhz CPU or faster, so
my next stab at this will use a faster machine. I just didn't have a faster
machine that I could easily locate to the arcade this moment.
I don't have any "arcade style" controls to attach to the machine, so I
can't comment on the game play exactly, other than that even with the
keyboard setup, Tempest looked totally real. It only gets better with the
right controls.
If congress passes a law that makes the day 36 hours, I'll have some time to
write my own game for this platform. I expect that others in this community
that have either have no children under two years old or a lot of energy
will jump right into this and get some custom software into our hands. I'll
plan for making some contribution, but I cannot possibly accurately say when
that will be. There are so many possibilities for this system, it's just
simply amazing.
By the way, I said it a few years ago, and I'll say it again. Tempest looks
absolutely phenomenal with an Amplifone. I've run the actual game with an
Amplifone and now the ZVG, and it's just simply a very fine looking
combination of display hardware.
If anyone's interested, I'll update the list as I bring more games online
and run this with a faster PC. Aside from that, make sure you pick up a ZVG
for yourself. This is just too cool!
Kudos to Zonn, Bill, and Neil!
