Twiddling with the contrast and brightness controls will allow you to adjust the brightness of the shots relative to the other vectors. Just make sure that the brightness is low enough so that there is no spot in the middle of the screen. Turning down the contrast a little should be all that's needed in this case but you may want (need) to tweak the brightness afterwards.
With the brightness too high you'll see retrace lines but if the brightness is correct for everything, the spurious vectors you get on asteroid explosions are a game board fault.
