My former boss at MapQuest used to be a programmer at Rock-Ola in
the early 80's. I knew that he was the designer/programmer for
Rocket Racer as we talked about it many times and he even gave me a
prototype marquee for the game -- called Space Racer.
Well, he is currently moving to a new house and yesterday, in some
old boxes, he unearthed the full, final, commented source code to
Rocket Racer! It's printed out on the green and white fanfold paper
with routines for the vector generator and the Z-80 code. I plan to
scan this in so perhaps some of the vector gurus here can resurrect
this long, lost game.
He told me that they had 3 prototype, working games built and were
planning on showing them at the 83 AMOA show but the head of Rock-
Ola was concerned that they were too costly to produce because of
the color vector monitor and they never went into production. He
also talked about how cool QB-3 was (again, several prototype
machines built), but it's very likely that the QB-3 code is long
gone.
I'll let everyone know once I have scanned in the source code. I
could scan the proto marquee as well.
