You can just use the box - 26KV doesnt travel far in the air and certianly wont arc out of a box - I generallj just lay the lead connector up on the bench and weight it down with something so it doesnt drift - you can look at the dust on the outside of the wire and tell if your HV is coming up.
There is no real need to discharge the connector afterwards as long as it isnt plugged into a CRT
