They are part of the window circuit -- analog clipping of the image. They
compare the X/Y values stored in a cap with the current output of the DAC,
and clip the image when it is out of bounds. Concievably, the 'ghost' image
could be clipped normally.
The operation of the window curcuit is described on Jed Margolin's web site
in the document "The Secret Life of Vector Generators", and in his e-mail to
me when he helped fix my BZ board back in feb. (Search the archive at
www.vectorlist.org for LM319 ).
If you don't have LM319's to put in (and are waiting to place an order), I
would at least make sure that whatever the LM319 is supposed to be driveing
is tied high or low, not floating, as that can cause odd problems.
Oh -- and without the LM319's, you are drawing on all four sides of your
tube, so this probably isn't a great idea.
