We always used:
"Smoke test" - first power up tests; if something's wrong it lets the 'magic
smoke' out. (And as we all know, magic smoke is what makes electronic
components work-- if one fails in circuit the magic smoke is released and it
ceases to function. ;-)
"Burn in test" - a longer term test (often at elevated
temperature/environmental conditions) designed to test for failures over a
longer operational period and/or over a more stressful environment than
might normally be encountered in the normal product application.
It seems like everyone has their own favorite terms...
