The 29B was very nice in 1986 when I started using it. It's still a good
unit, but if going the dataio route, I'd consider a 2900 or 3900, if you
can find one at a reasonable price. If space is no object, the Unisite is
the way to go. These all do, all of the old parts, including 2708s and PROMs.

I've also used the Needhams EMP-20 & 30 series (parallel and USB respectively).
They're very small, work with modern OSes, and handle the latest parts.
However, they don't do parts with negative voltages (2708/TMS2716), nor do
they handle high current parts (PROMs).

An EMP and a 29B make a good combo.

The 2900/3900 stand well by themselves (just make sure you get the s/w with it).

My 2 cents...
