At a former job, I used to use large SUN monitors with my laptop, via the
use of a special PC-to-Sun monitor cable adapter that I found was available.
See http://www.cablesnmor.com/sun-to-pc.html for more info.
Never had an SGI monitor to play with though . . . . .

if you want to experiment then go on ebay,
there are 20/21" monitors made by sony for SGI & SUN that can run way over
xga,
they dont work on pc's and weigh a ton.
designed for professional cad work - you can get them for about 5-10.
sometimes they are even given away if you buy a $10 indy or ultrasparc.
