There really wasn't much digital stuff on the Space Fury/Eliminator/Zektor
(analog) sound boards that'd call for a PAL/CPLD... Couple latches, but
mostly analog-- loads of opamps, timers (555 style), noise generators,
muxes, transistors, caps, other passives, etc. Lots-o-parts. ;-)
Could probably use something like the Cypress PSOC line to integrate some of
the analog stuff, but getting the same 'sound' from modern components can
actually be pretty tricky. (Just look at the lengths some of the '80s synth
enthusiasts have to go to when replacing parts to keep the same sound.
Transistors, different types of capacitors, opamps can all effect in various
ways.)
Soooo... It could be done I'm sure, but it's way above my pain threshold.
Neil and I had really good luck getting high quality recordings from my
boardsets-- we just didn't get a *complete* set of samples due to various
problems with the assortment of analog sound boards I had available at the
time. (they be need'n some fix'n before trying again. ;-)
