Asteroids Deluxe CT audio advice?

The pokey discussion made me think more about Deluxe sound, specifically
the sound in my Deluxe CT. I love my Deluxe CT, but one point where it is
weak compared to the UR is in the sound department. I think the deep bass
rumble from and UR cabinet is great, especially from the explosions and when
you hit thrust.
     
    They used a pretty crappy paper cone 4" speaker in the side of the CT
cabinet. No bass response at all.
I'm currently using an older car audio 3 way 6x9 mounted in place of the
crappy factory speaker. Sounds a bit better, but still doesn't have the low
end like an UR.
 
    There is a small amount of room in the bottom of the CT cabinet; I'm
thinking of adding a small subwoofer somehow so I can get the CT to sound
more like an UR..Any advice on this?
    I don't want to mod the crap out of the cabinet. Can any audio experts
suggest a possible sub that might work? I guess I could build a small
enclosure for it, but the sub is going to have to be small..I'm guessing they
might make small 4-6" subs today that might sound pretty good and fit in
this small area. Any suggestions / help would be welcome.
