Thanks for the replies. Both suggestions were good ones.
However, it did turn out to be the 8255. Clipped out the old one and
removed all the pins and cleaned up the pads (what a pain). I did have
enough foresight to install a 40-pin socket in its place. Dropped in a new
8255 and all is well.
