I'm in the process of building a variable (~5-15) 1.5A power supply and my
parts certainly were more than $15. Granted, I just bought some from
Digi-Key w/o digging around for cheaper sources but I did all this thinking
I could do MUCH better, price wise, than a store bought supply. I was
wrong.

Tom,
You sould be able to pick up a switcher pretty cheap. They usually supply
+/-5V and +12V , some will also do -12V. It should be good for most of you
board power requirements.
