I usually remove the old transistors, clean with alcohol or acetone
and then I use these insulators that are made out
of heat conductive rubber.

I never re-use the mica insulator (except when its an oddball
and I don't
have one in the parts drawer).. For the "standard" types you
can pick up
100 for next to nothing from most supply places (read -- NOT
Radio Shack)..
Oh yeah - is there a solvent that will remove heat sink
compound? I
occasionally get monitors where the previous "technician" (I use
the term
in a non-flattering way) decided that one tube/transistor would
be the
right approach so the entire chassis is covered with the stuff..
And it
is highly resistant to removal. (and yes, when I'm done I like
the
monitor to be nice and clean.. I'm sure medication could help
me out here..)
