Ok - I need to start thinking about what I am typing here.
I installed the upgrade from Bob which, after installation, was causing the
fuses at F100 and F101 to blow. In the process it also took out the diodes
at D102 and D103. I replaced the Bobkit supplied transistors at Q604 and
Q704 and the original transistors at Q603 and Q703 with NTE49 and NTE50
equivalent NPN and PNP transistors.
After replacing those and a dead zener diode at location ZD901 on the HV
board - the monitor sprang to life.
I received an e-mail from someone today who also said they "blindly"
installed the Bobkit and were having the same problems and traced it back to
the supplied transistors which were the wrong part. So, I would use caution
when doing this upgrade.

Although I have used the 49's at 604 and 704, I have never tried the 50's at
603 and 703. Why, you might ask? Because I initially relied on this
summary of Gregg's article, which leaves out this upgrade:

across your problem here. I believe that the NTE48's are NPN transistors,
while the schematic calls for PNP at locations Q603 and Q703. I assume that
NTE50's are PNP and would work.
