I've had plenty of boards which gave the error code "m" for bad math box that still displayed the test screens. However that doesn't necessarily mean you could completely remove the auxillary pcb... Another concern might be where the test switch is activated on the pcbs. If the wires from the test switch go to the smaller edge connector (the math box edge connector), it might be difficult/impossible to even activate the self test without a math box present. If I was at home I could check the schematic, but I am not.

If you are testing these boards in a cabinet, I would also be concerned about removing the load on your audio amplifiers. With the math box unplugged, you might damage your audio reg 2.
