Do G08's REALLY start on fire ?

I have to say I have it pretty lucky. My wife let's me get away with a
lot. I've filled the basement 10 machines, and if I could realisiticly find
a place to put more, she'd let me get them.

However, after waiting almost a year for Star Trek to work, I suppose that
wasn't the time to tell her "Oh, buy the way, never leave this one on and
leave the room."

"Why ?"

"They have a tendancy to start on fire."

Needless to say, she's a bit worried. To her credit she didn't even suggest
getting the thing the hell out of the house, but she would like some more
details on how dangerous this thing is.

The warnings about the G08's are common, but I've never seen it discussed in
detail. Do they really start on fire ? What exactly starts on fire -- just
some component smoke, or should we be concerned about the wood case actually
igniting ? Is it one componant that is self-destructive, and could it be
replaced with something bigger, or is it just a general design flaw ?

When I first looked at the thing, and saw transistor legs bent up with wires
soldered to them, I could see potential trouble. The fan bolted right to the
monitor heat sink amazes me too -- how a monitor can generate so much
heat. It does come up much faster than the WG's, but I'm wondering if that
is actually part of the problem.
