>How big a deal would it be to set up a Tempest machine to play Tac Scan?
Heh-heh... That's actually quite a decent idea! (Mmmmmmm... Tac/Scan.)
A few things:
1) You'll probably want to power the G-80 off a separate PC switcher. (and
maybe use one of my Sega Multigame boards to get rid of the EPROM board to
cut the power/heat)
2) You'll need to build a couple of op-amp level convertors for the video
outputs from the G-80 to get them compatible with the WG6100. It's not hard
at all-- most any op-amp is plenty fast. I used a couple LF353's.
3) The Wg6100 won't *quite* keep up with Tac/Scan. There will occasionally
be a little "tearing" on some object 'cause the beam will turn on before the
deflection settles to the right spot. It's not too bad on Tac/Scan though.
4) The number of teeth on the quadrature encoder (uhhhh, "spinner") is
different from Tac/Scan and Tempest, so the turn-rates will be different. I
don't recall how many teeth Tempest has, but I think that Tac/Scan has 64?
5) You'll need to use a "spinner interface" board (like from a G-80 cabinet)
to convert the Tempest spinner quadrature output to the 8-bit parallel
output for Tac/Scan. (I *might* have one of my replacement spinner boards
left if you need one...)
With both Tempest and Tac/Scan hooked up/powered up, you should be able just
use a few DPDT relays to switch R/G/B/X/Y and Audio automatically with a
switch if you wanted to...
