Yup, been there, done that. :( The engineer at Atari who designed this to be
interchangeable AND numbering them 6 and 9 (which become the opposites when the
board is UPSIDE DOWN - I didn't notice) should be awarded some trophy for stupid
design...

I have made this dame mistake on a Tempest boardset. By doing this, the +5 will
become something like 15+ volts. The Tempest boardset immediately crapped out.
Half of the 2114 RAM was blown, and 3 out of four AM2901's were defective, some
even bursted open. Amazingly ALL TTL chips survived!!!

On the ARII, the LM305 regulator was shot as well. Replacing all these parts
fixed the problem...

Anyway, to prevent this same mistake again, I just soldered some unused pins on
the two connectors on the ARII (J6 and J9) shut, thereby making it impossible to
put the connector for J6 on J9 and vice versa (the pinning of the connector
allows you greatly to do this)
