"Off course"? That is the certainly the case when using a linear supply, to
get "on course" <;-)>, I do recommend the use of the switcher on
Electrohome/Sega vector games. I do believe that the monitors failed from
ground reference problems caused by the linear supply having burnt ground
connectors. Saw a lot of this with Gottlieb Pinball games burning out the
driver transistors because the ground reference on the power supply would
drift with respect to the ground of the driver transistors due to the
ground point of the regulator board overheating and allowing a fractional
volt difference between the regulator and the main cabinet ground. Once you
would get a difference of 0.7VDC the transistors would start to turn on,
blowing them slowly...
As for the relay, does Digi-Key or Radio Crap not carry these? I guess you
could use a 12VDC relay and run off one of the spare 12VDC outputs of the
switcher, but I thought hooking it to the actual +5 supply would give a
safer drop-out response.
