I use a 36 VAC transformer on the bench for testing _Asteroids_ boards.
Bear in mind that Atari means 18 VAC, Center Tap (to ground), and 18 VAC
again. This makes a total of 36 VAC.

On your original transformer, make sure the center tap is making good
contact with ground on your motherboard (check edge connector). If the
ground isn't good, it can make the resulting voltages much higher than
normal.

Offhand, I don't know if anything else in the game uses that 36 VAC from the
transformer. The board itself doesn't draw that much current. The
transformer I use just happens to be one at my workplace that we normally
use for testing an entirely different type of board, and we got the
transformer from Allied, I believe. There's nothing special about it: 120
VAC in, 36 VAC (center tap) out.
