How can I possibly work for 5 hours being as patient as possible then at the
end rush stuff just to see it working?
I got a chance to start work on the Tempest UR (#00097) I picked up non-working
a couple weeks ago. I received all the parts (Bob Roberts kit + extras and a
LV2000) and installed all of them according to the Wells-Gardner 6100 Vector
Monitor FAQ and Guide Version 1.0 (March 1, 2002). I did NOT install a new
pot on the HV board since it said only to do it if absolutly necessary. Other
than that it is all in. The monitor had two burnt resistors in the LV section
before the work and there was some minor monitor activity from time to time in
one quadrant.
I got the job done and left the monitor out on my table and hooked it up to the
wiring harness and applied power. No smoke. Both LV2000 LEDs were on. A nice
whinning sound out of the monitor which sounded to me like deflection (I'm new
to the WG6101). But no picture. I left the game on a good 3 to 4 minutes but
nothing. Turned it off and checked stuff like connections. Everything looked
good but I tried it again. Same stuff but now I make sure there are no LEDs
on the deflection board that are on besides the LV2000. Nope. I look for a
picture but still nothing. I go out front and hit the player one button and
close up the control panel. I turn off the game and decide to check the HV.
I get the probe ground hooked up to the spring and turn on the game. I insert
the probe (unknown calibration) and hear there is HV and see around 14k on the
meter. Thank god I'm getting some HV I figured. I pull the probe out and look
and now I see a picture!
The picture is a big smaller than normal and off center but I knew I would
probably have to adjust that (not done yet). I took a few pictures and then
notice that the red is starting to fade the longer the game is on. I also
noticed that after the game was on for a while I started to see the retraces
showing up for some objects. It got worse and worse and I could see more and
more retrace lines. Yes white looked a bit bright. I turned the game off and
looked stuff over and then turned it back on. I did nothing but the retrace
lines were now gone. I decided that any problems I was seeing were probably
adjustment stuff so I turn off the monitor and throw it back in the cabinet.
I get it all in and hooked up and I notice for the first time that R29 on the
Audio/Reg board looks fried. I'm pretty sure this was already like this since
I didn't see or smell any smoke. But I took the chance and turned the game
back on and it worked ok just off center and slightly small. I didn't leave it
on long.
Now what should I do? I saw pots for the vertical/horizontal size and center.
But I didn't see anything for the red. Also since the white is too bright
should I be messing with the "Screen" adjustment on the HV cage? I'm pretty
happy to see it running. I just want to make sure I do the right things now
to dial it in. And that R29 on the audio/reg board bothers me and would like
to know what a burnt one will do. Should I refrain from turning it on until I
fix that up? I assume so.
Thanks for any help or suggestions anyone can make.
