Yep, I think I have cracks/fissures (whatever a fissure may be!). There is also pitting on the metal cage where the sparks jump to the case.
I have cleaned the unit, the discolouration near the HT lead is not dirt but I presume the location from which the spark jumps!
I have a picture if anyone would like to take a look and vote on whether I could sell it as untested on ebay ;-)
Where do I go from here to get this working?

If you look closely (or now maybe not so closely) you'll probably see
cracks/fissures/etc on the transformer.. Not having HV coming out of it
is pretty much an indication of toastage. Sometimes you see the beginnings
of the flashes (internal shorting) -- some people have suggested HV putty
but that never seems to work for very long (except in some cases)..
