Easy enough to tell, run the game WITHOUT the 6502A and see if the 555
gets hot. It would take one hell of a current draw to heat a 555, they
can output a quarter of an amp!
Now, the CMOS version of the 555 is a different story, only good for a
tenth of an amp.
