My 2 credits says that's your problem.
If the spot killer is on, it's most likely blanking the beam(s), and you in
turn may have cranked the screen control up to compensate (i.e. so you could
see a picture).
In that scenario (beam blanked and screen cranked up to override), you
_will_ see retrace and the beams will all be at roughly the same level (i.e.
blank level), making the display appear white.
Keep following the spot killer road, and let us know what you find.
