Just replace the sockets if you want to stay with the regular set of
roms or install the Braze kit. Using chemicals such as metal cleaners
can create more problems than the solve. I've even heard of people
using the dishwasher to clean boards (!). Face it, Atari like a few
others used crap sockets. If you're cleaning IC pins, use a slightly
abrasive eraser gently on them.
The easiest way to swap the sockets is to cut the plastic down the
center like a salmon, remove the remains from the board in pieces,
usually only the pins themselves remain. These are easily removed using
a small tip and needle nose pliers. The holes are easily cleared of
solder.
Once replaced with machined sockets, they'll be good almost forever.
