Only Lunar Lander and Asteroids (I believe) used the system you are thinking
of, where the CPU set the position of the bean. This was called the Digital
Vector Generator.
Later games (Definately all the color, it's BattleZone and Red Baron I'm not
sure of) used an Analog Vector Generator. Esentially this means putting a
low pass filter across the output of the D/A converters.
You set the end point, set the other end point, and let an analong circuit
do the work for you.
This is a sumary of a sumary. It wasn't until someone posted a explination
here that used the phrase "low pass filter" that I actually understood
it. DOn't know that I'm doing a great job explaining it though. And this
doesn't exactly answer your question.
