But what is price friendly?
New WG 19" low res monitors sell for about $250. And these are sold in very
high Quantities.
Are you expecting a similar price for a replacement X/Y?
I'm just curious to know what people would be willing to pay for a new X/Y
monitor.
My guess is that anything less than $600 is very unlikely.
$100 - HV (if it can be done, this is cheap)
$150 - CRT (Qyt 1 is $165, hopefully we could get a break)
$100 - YOKE (and this is a *wild* guess with no basis)
$100 - Chassis, electronics, PCB, heatsinks, etc. (cheap)
$50 - An hours worth of labor to put it all together. (That's cheap!)
$100 - Very minimal profit that perhaps a hobbyist would be happy with.
---- $600 So if you found someone who wants to do this as a labor of love, you might get X/Y monitors for $600. For someone who's livelihood is manufacturing, $100 profit, at low quantities will not make up for the engineering investment. At the Qty's we're talking about you'd have to expect a $200 ~ $300 dollar profit, and even then it's a lot of work with little payoff. Of course qty is everything, if one was selling 100 a month, $100 profit would be fine for a small company. And of course if the monitor design has any classic X/Y symptoms of fire, fried HV sections, etc. You can just declare bankruptcy and go the way of the Edsel. I for one would be willing to spend a $600 on a well designed, brand spankin' new, bullet proof X/Y monitor, but on the last poll: http://us.votenow.de/vote.cgi?104625 People were becoming very reluctant at $350. You can't even get a new med res raster for that price! -Zonn On Wed, 17 Apr 2002 08:53:38 -0700, John Butler <John.Butler@asu.edu> wrote: >Ok, I am not the expert but that is OK.
